The Gottman Method: Building a Sound Relationship House

Why do some couples thrive while others drift apart? Four decades of research by Dr. John Gottman offer some clear — and surprising — answers.

The Science of Love

Dr. John Gottman has spent over 40 years studying couples — what makes relationships work and what tears them apart. His research has produced some of the most reliable predictors of relationship success and failure in psychology.

The Four Horsemen

Gottman identified four communication patterns that, when habitual, predict relationship breakdown:

  1. Criticism — Attacking your partner's character
  2. Contempt — Treating your partner with disrespect or mockery — the single strongest predictor of breakdown
  3. Defensiveness — Deflecting responsibility and playing the victim
  4. Stonewalling — Emotionally withdrawing and shutting down

The Antidotes

Every Horseman has an antidote:

Horseman Antidote
Criticism Gentle start-up ("I feel...")
Contempt Culture of appreciation
Defensiveness Take responsibility
Stonewalling Physiological self-soothing

Can Couples Therapy Help?

Absolutely — especially when started early. Couples therapy is not just for relationships in crisis. Many couples seek therapy to strengthen communication, navigate life transitions, or simply deepen their connection.
